Founded in 2013

[vc_column_text]Lorie Kruckeberg and Diane Alt (and their families) became friends years ago when they discovered a mutual love of camping, hiking and the outdoors.  After taking a course offered by the Missouri Department of Conservation called Pioneer Soap-Making, which taught the cold-process method of making soap, as well as about the essential oils the early American settlers used to repel biting insects, and after their own additional research, the two friends attempted their very first batch of soap on October 4, 2012.  That first batch was a success–they had created a recipe that produced a bubbly, moisturizing, hard bar of soap that repelled biting bugs, too!

So What to Name their New Business Venture?

Missouri, the SHow-Me State, where their soap is made by hand, is not really known for its mountains.  While the term Ozark Mountains is familiar to many, the high, deeply eroded region is actually geologically identified as a dissected plateau.  Missouri does have a mountain range in the southeastern part of the state–the St. Francois Mountains–home to Missouri’s highest peak in Taum Sauk Mountain at 1,772 feet! Whew!

Why the name Old Mountain Soap Co.?  Both of their last names (Alt & Kruckenberg) are of German origin and translate in English, respectively, to ‘old’ and ‘crutch mountain.’  Of course they dropped the ‘crutch,’ believing that Old Mountain Soap Co. truly represented who they are, their love of nature and the natural products they wanted to create.

Old Mountain Soap Co. officially formed on April 26, 2013, and is located in O’Fallon, Mo.
